As duas dimensões da teoria da história de David Hume

Resumo

O presente artigo aponta a existência de duas dimensões complementares, porém distintas, da história no pensamento do filósofo e historiador escocês setecentista David Hume. A primeira delas abarca o entendimento da história como forma de conhecimento imparcial, justificado e sistematicamente organizado sobre o passado, cujos procedimentos e técnicas foram amplamente teorizados por Hume ao longo de sua carreira. A segunda é a história como processo histórico, isto é, como uma totalidade abarcadora de todos os eventos e agentes do passado. Esta seria dotada de um padrão organizador e de um sentido que, após desvelado e explicado, permitiria ao historiador algum grau de especulações e projeções sobre o futuro. Na construção da análise, fazem-se referências às principais considerações sobre a história em obras de Hume produzidas entre meados da década de 1730 e o início dos anos 1760. Dentre os textos privilegiados em nosso exame, destacam-se o Tratado da Natureza Humana, alguns dos Ensaios, as duas Investigações e a História da Inglaterra.
