Abstract

This study analyzes the importance of culture as a relevant factor in the role that companies play in society. It presents a new perspective by considering factors beyond those commonly acknowledged. This approach is based on the decisions surrounding the history of Livraria Cultura and its bankruptcy process. The objective of this study is to demonstrate how various companies influence cultural and social factors, highlighting that this aspect should be considered when assessing whether a company fulfills its social function. To achieve this objective, a basic and bibliographic research was conducted, revealing the significance of reading and culture for society. The study highlights the evolution of bankruptcy and recovery law, which strive to maintain and preserve companies in light of the interests surrounding them. The findings of this research confirm that culture and reading are essential factors for societal development, and therefore, should not be disregarded when evaluating a company's social function and its contribution to social progress.
