Teacher training is an important issue in Brazilian education. This article seeks to indicate the extent to which is possible to discuss teacher training with a funk teacher in Rio de Janeiro, Duda, by interviewing her during her participation in the PUC-Rio extension project «O mapa do funk na Rocinha». This is a qualitative study in which interviews were the main data collection technique. We concluded that there are teachers who are constituting themselves as such through training that takes place in practice and with a career that is neither started nor formed at university. We point out that among the highlights are gender issues, an analytical category that has been the focus of our analysis and which is a current agenda in the history of Brazilian teacher training.
