Abstract

In this study, we will explore the articulation of modes of political participation in the digital public sphere, focusing on the photographs produced during the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip since 2023, based on the work of Palestinian photographer Motaz Azaiza. We will analyze how research on the political participation of ordinary individuals and activists can enhance our understanding of the implications arising from the production and sharing of these images on social media. For instance, through the daily impact of direct communication from within the conflict, the photographer engages the audience by employing a more accessible language than that of traditional journalism. As capable of shaping discussions, photography now stands as a potent means of igniting the public sphere with more nuanced and diverse debates that have the potential to foster new forms of online citizenship.
