Abstract

This article aims to draw connections between the approaches to action scenes in the John Wick (2014 - 2023) and Mission: Impossible (1996 - 2023) franchises, which stand out from contemporary Hollywood action films by replacing the reliance on editing and special effects with the use of physicality and the presence of actors in action scenes. By discussing concepts of the figural, the body in cinema, spectacle, and the production of presence, drawing from authors such as Baecque (2009), Dubois (2012), Gumbrecht (2010), and Pavis (2008), we analyze elements of these films, investigating how the direction organizes the mise en scène around their protagonists, making the movement of the bodies the main attraction of the films.
