The teaching of Santomean native languages from the perspective of university students

Abstract

This article reflects the result of a study conducted with students from the Higher Institute of Education and Communication, an organic unit of the University of São Tomé and Príncipe, under the theme “The Teaching of Santomean Native Languages from the Perspective of University Students.” The aim is to provide reflection on the teaching of native languages in higher education in São Tomé and Príncipe. For the theoretical framework of this study, references were made to Dulce Pereira (2007), Ana Agostinho, Manuele Lima e Gabriel Araújo (2016), Esmael Fernandes (2023), Rita Gonçalves (2016),  Rita Gonçalves e Tjerk Hagemeijer (2015) e Tjerk Hagemeijer (1999, 2009). The sample consisted of 40 undergraduate students from the Early Childhood and Basic Education programs. Based on the questionnaire applied, it was concluded that the teaching of native languages can help to demystify existing linguistic prejudice, strengthen cultural identity and tradition, and contribute to the promotion of learning alongside Portuguese.

Author Biographies

Esmael Fernandes, Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Modern Languages and Literature: Portuguese/French, from the Higher Polytechnic Institute of São Tomé and Príncipe.
He has a degree in Portuguese Language and Culture from the Faculty of Lisbon of the University of Lisbon.
He has a Master's degree in Reading and Writing Teaching from the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.
He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Évora.
He is a contract university professor at the Higher Institute of Education and Communication of the University of São Tomé and Príncipe.
His entire career has been linked to education: he began teaching in 1997 at the Trindade Secondary School. He has been a teacher, teaching secretary, deputy headmaster, school principal, director of basic education, and director of the office of the Minister of Education, Culture, and Science.

Ana Alexandra Silva, Universidade de Évora

She is an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Évora, Portugal. She graduated from the University of Évora, where she completed her degree in Portuguese and English Teaching (1996). She obtained a master's degree in Portuguese Linguistics (2001) from the University of Coimbra and a PhD in Linguistics (2008) from the University of Évora. Dr. Silva's research has focused on the areas of Portuguese as a foreign and second language. She is a researcher at the Center for Literary Studies at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro / University of Évora.
