Objective: We investigated how AI has been studied by the CTS field in Brazil.
Methodology: Quantitative analysis was used to map where research on AI is taking place, as well as to identify which fields of knowledge are involved in this discussion, with the intention of locating Brazilian STS. The research was conducted in the Web of Science for the period 2013 to 2022.
Results: It was found that the Brazilian STS field has been dedicated to debating the technologies resulting from AI, albeit in an incipient, yet growing manner. It was identified that the most recurring themes in these debates are related to ethics, privacy, transparency, and governance of AI. The connections between the researched topics and the STS approach are also critically discussed.
Conclusions: The field of AI is a research area that branches into various fields of knowledge, producing technologies increasingly used by industries, governments, and individuals. The STS field is an interdisciplinary field that can contribute significantly to enabling critical debates on AI-related issues in Brazil, aiming to build alternatives where these technologies are developed and absorbed while mitigating the resulting problems.
