Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. If this is not the case, an explanation must be provided in the Comments to the Editor field.
  • Complete authorship information for all authors must be entered during the submission process. Use the “Add Author” function to include all co-authors.
  • All metadata must be provided in English, including the title, abstract, and keywords.
  • Figures and tables must be embedded within the manuscript and not placed at the end of the document. Figures, graphs, equations, diagrams, and other illustrations must be of suitable publication quality, use a white background only, and be prepared at consistent dimensions to allow uniform resizing (maximum single-column width: 8 cm).
    Scanned images must have a minimum resolution of 800 dpi (bitmap).
  • For research involving human participants or vertebrate animals, authors must upload, as a supplementary file, a copy of the approval issued by the appropriate Research Ethics Committee, including the corresponding Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Consideration (CAAE) number, where applicable, and in accordance with the legislation of the country in which the research was conducted.
  • All references cited in the manuscript must also be entered in the submission metadata in alphabetical order, without numbering, leaving one blank line between each reference.

Author Guidelines

Editorial Policies

The journal accepts original manuscripts written in Portuguese or English. No submission or article processing charges are applied following acceptance after peer review.

  1. Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively through the Journal Electronic Publishing System, available at: https://ojs.uel.br/revistas/uel/index.php/seminabio/submission/wizard.
  2. The corresponding author and all co-authors must provide their ORCID iD in the submission system, together with all required identification information, including full name, complete institutional affiliation, city, state, country, a brief biographical statement, Lattes Curriculum URL, funding information, and any potential conflicts of interest.
  3. Manuscripts may be prepared in either Portuguese or English using Microsoft Word, Times New Roman, 11-point font, 2-cm margins, and 1.5-line spacing. Manuscripts submitted in English will be given publication priority. All pages must be numbered, and the manuscript length should comply with the limits established for the corresponding article category.
  4. Manuscript categories: 
    a) Original Research Articles: recommended maximum of 20 pages.
    b) Invited Review Articles: recommended maximum of 30 pages.
    c) Short Communications and Case Reports: recommended maximum of 15 pages.
  5. For research involving human participants or vertebrate animals, in accordance with Brazilian National Health Council Resolution CNS No. 196/96, authors must upload, as a supplementary file, a copy of the approval issued by the appropriate Research Ethics Committee, including the corresponding Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Consideration (CAAE) number, in accordance with the legislation of the country in which the research was conducted.
  6. The first page of the manuscript must include the title of the article, followed by its English translation, the Resumo and Abstract, and the corresponding Palavras-chave and Keywords. To ensure the integrity of the double-blind peer review process, authors' names and academic credentials must not appear in the submitted manuscript. All authorship information must be entered in the Submission Metadata section of the submission system.
  7. The journal publishes original research articles, review articles, short communications, and reviews authored by PhD holders and PhD candidates. Master's and undergraduate students may submit manuscripts only in collaboration with at least one PhD holder.
  8. Both the Resumo and the Abstract must not exceed 250 words and should be prepared using single-line spacing. They should concisely present the objective(s), materials and methods, principal findings, and conclusions of the study. The use of abbreviations in the title and abstract is discouraged.
  9. Palavras-chave and Keywords should include three to five descriptors, separated by semicolons, with the initial letter of each descriptor capitalized. For manuscripts in the Health Sciences, authors should use the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) developed by the Virtual Health Library . Authors are encouraged to select descriptors that do not duplicate terms used in the title.
  10. Manuscripts should be organized according to the conventional structure of a scientific paper, including the following sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Alternatively, the conclusion may be incorporated into the final section of the discussion. The text should be presented as a continuous document, without page breaks between sections.
  11. Sections and Subsections: progressive numbering should not be used for section and subsection headings. Instead, typographical formatting should be used to distinguish hierarchical levels, as follows:

Primary heading: bold, sentence case (capitalize the first word only).
Secondary heading: italic, sentence case (capitalize the first word only).
Tertiary heading: regular font, sentence case (capitalize the first word only).

  1. Acknowledgments of financial or institutional support should be included at the end of the manuscript, immediately before the References.
  2. Appendices may be used to present extensive lists, statistical data, or other supplementary material.
  3. Figures and photographs must be embedded in the manuscript in numerical order and also uploaded as supplementary files in JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. If previously published illustrations are used, the original source and permission for reproduction must be acknowledged.
  4. Tables and text boxes must include a descriptive title positioned above the table to enable readers to understand the content without referring to the main text.
  5. For all types of illustrations — including tables, text boxes, drawings, diagrams, flowcharts, photographs, maps, graphs, and figures — the caption should appear above the illustration and include its Arabic numeral followed by a hyphen and the corresponding title. The source of the illustration (mandatory, including for material produced by the authors), legends, explanatory notes, and any additional information necessary for interpretation should be placed below the illustration in 10-point font.
  6. Quantities, units of measurement, and symbols must comply with the applicable standards established by the Brazilian National Standards Association (ABNT).
  7. Citations: References must be cited using the Vancouver citation style and numbered consecutively throughout the text. Citation numbers should appear as superscript Arabic numerals enclosed in parentheses, without mentioning the authors' names, except when the authors form part of the narrative. Consecutive references should be indicated as a range (e.g., (1–4)), while non-consecutive references should be separated by commas (e.g., (2,6,8)).                                                                                                                                                                                                    Note: Manuscripts that do not comply with the required sequential numbering of citations will be returned to the authors for correction.
  8. References: References to both print and electronic sources must be formatted according to the Vancouver citation style established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), as updated in 2009.   9. Authors are solely responsible for the accuracy of all references.

The corresponding author must submit, through the journal's electronic submission system, a Cover Letter confirming that the manuscript is original, authorizing its publication in Semina: Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde, and declaring that it has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.
  2. Publication of accepted manuscripts is subject to a favorable recommendation from the journal's ad hoc Scientific Review Committee.
  3. Any matters not covered by these guidelines will be resolved by the Editorial Board responsible for the subject area to which the manuscript has been submitted.

Original Research Articles

Original Research Articles should not exceed 20 pages, including tables, figures, text boxes, and references. Manuscripts should demonstrate a significant contribution to the field, a sound theoretical foundation, an appropriate methodology, and rigorous analysis and interpretation of the results, in accordance with the journal's editorial guidelines.

Review Articles

Review Articles should not exceed 30 pages. Whenever possible, references should primarily include literature published within the previous five years. Depending on the nature and specific characteristics of the topic, references published within the previous ten years may be accepted when appropriately justified.

Case Reports

The journal accepts original Short Communications and Case Reports that provide a relevant and original contribution to their respective fields.

These manuscripts should not exceed 15 pages, including tables, figures, text boxes, and references. They must present an appropriate theoretical foundation, a clear methodological description (when applicable), adequate contextualization of the case, and a critical discussion based on the current scientific literature, while maintaining scientific rigor and compliance with the journal's editorial guidelines.
