Abstract

Objective: to analyze the studies that address the indexing process in institutional repositories in Information Science.
Methodology: uses systematic mapping of Information Science literature from the last ten years. The systematic mapping process involved the stages of planning, searching, selection, quality assessment, data extraction, data classification and analysis of the studies. The data was extracted from the Web of Science, BRAPCI and Scopus databases and analyzed in the following categories: authors and institutions, study objectives and guiding challenges, methods used, contributions and practical implications for the field of study.
Results: The findings revealed a growing global interest in the subject, accompanied by new approaches to indexing. However, significant gaps were identified, such as the need for more in-depth studies on assessing the impact of repositories, data lifecycle management, integration with other systems and the use of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) language models. The analysis of the methods used showed the diversity of approaches in the research, with an emphasis on systematic review, content analysis and case studies. Although the studies have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of indexing and access to information, gaps were identified in areas such as indexing non-textual data and interoperability between systems.
Conclusions: the study demonstrates the importance of indexing for the discovery and access of information in institutional repositories, while identifying gaps and challenges that need to be overcome. The research contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the area, offering valuable insights for future studies and professional practices.
