The sacred bread of memory is the black body

This paper proposes a reading of Conceição Evaristo’s short story “O Sagrado Pão dos Filhos” (2016), highlighting how the character Andina Magnólia’s experiences of blackness, reaffirmed through escrevivência, trace a time of ancestry and the power of language. The hypothesis raised in our analysis takes as its theoretical point the notion that it is in the body and through the body (the body of writing and the black female body), placed in performance, that orders of return of temporalities and possibilities of transfiguration of meanings, rearrangement of memory and history are installed. To support our reading, we drew on scholars who have examined the performance of black bodies in time and space, including Lélia Gonzales, Leda Maria Martins, and Edimilson de Almeida Pereira. We conclude that Evaristo’s short story is constructed through a language that reinaugurates a foundational narrative, such as the Christian multiplication myth.
